Here is something that seems like a very plain vanilla job search trick, but it is quite useful if you do not know how to do it.

When we re-print on heavy paper back to our customers, we will very often be printed on both sides of the paper. Such a two-page resume can sit on a sheet of paper, front and rear.

This weekend I had a client ask if we used some kind of pleasure-printer to do it. She wanted to know and do, even if it goes ahead it could. I said no. In fact, we use a very basic HP laser printer to do our printing, and I find that many modern printers can do what we do. So if your printer is, we say, less than 5 years old, you can print your resume on both sides of the paper also.

Here’s how it works:

and see if your printer is processing “duplex printing”.

What is duplex printing? It is the original concept for … You guessed it … Pressure on both sides of the paper. When this function, then the process is fairly straightforward and automated.

First, you go to print. I’m assuming you are using Microsoft Word.

But what if your printer can not duplex printing?

This is not a problem. Why? Because when you think about it, you can manually force, any printer to print on both sides of the paper.

Simply print out a page.

Then take this page and manually feed it back into the printer, to be sure, however, to turn it over. Now print second It should come out the other side of the page you just printed.

You may need to experiment a few times to get this right, because some feed on the printer head,

For years people have asked me if there is a “best” time to respond to a job advertisement? You should watch the job boards like a hawk, obsessively refreshing, so that you can get your resume in the first? I never really knew the answer to this question.

Last week I told you what will be in a cover letter. The post was by the realization that I will never really asked a lot of letters on this blog do so. But there was also some frustration I have with professional born recently. The long story short, I’ve seen some terrible letters from customers in recently.

The strange thing is they’ve all had the same basic cover letter mistakes again. So I wanted to make a mistake that everyone does address what a plague of bad cover letter.


Do not attempt the interview in your cover letter

The number one mistake people make when writing a cover letter is making it far too long. Again it should include a cover letter only 3 digits … Are four paragraphs tops. And there is absolutely no longer than one page.

A terrible cover letter is one that goes on and on and competes with the media’s attention again.

I think people forget because they use the cover letter to preemptively with questions that should really try to be left for the interview. I can understand the impulse. You feel like you use in your cover letter can do to better explain or support what is in your resume. I mean, sure you could cover letter briefly why there is a gap in employment or why you are switching careers. But so short!

Do not give the impulse to explain everything away, what in the letter. The resume should stand on its own. Do you still have questions, the employer should be allowed for the interview.

Do not try to run the interview in your cover letter. It is good to use the cover letter to one or two points in your CV for more clarity address. But if you go too far this slippery slope before you know it you have to repeat things that are to begin in your application. Soon you will find just rehashing your resume in the second sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, and the hiring manager is wondering what to read all the more important documents, your resume or cover letter.

Again let the resume stand on its own. The letter supports and complements your resume, but it is only a formality, a introduction for your CV . It should never compete for attention with your resume.

Someone tweeted me the other day that I am much more content in this blog about resumes, cover letters, but not much about. So, I would like to change that this week.

Let’s start with the basics: What should be in a cover letter

To really be honest with you, cover letters are not things complicated. In fact, in my opinion when it comes to cover letters, is simplicity key. If there is one mistake I see over and over again is that people try to write a novel in her letter. That’s just not necessary. A cover letter is a little bit of formality and a promotional tool. All you really need to do is say who you are, say what you want, I thank the readers, and get out again.


The 6 things that every letter

Should Be A cover letter must only 6 main components:

header / Contact Info. You should just your name and contact information at the top of the cover letter. The attempt to change the design look and feel or your resume is probably advisable. Thank You Section . And the last paragraph of the letter should simply say, thank you for checking me here how you can contact me (as you wish, of course) and I look forward to hearing from you. 2-3 sentences tops.

Your name and signature .

That’s it. A cover letter should be short and sweet. It is not meant to complement your resume. In fact, to repeat, what in your resume (Highlights of course). But it certainly should not compete for attention with your resume. Again, the cover letter is just an introduction for your resume.

I recommend to stay for the presentation I will outline in paragraph 3 above. Maybe 4-5 paragraphs in extreme situations. But I can not emphasize enough that you really want your letter to be only one page. A resume can be more than one page, but a letter should not.

Quite simply, the answer is absolutely yes

I write one of these posts almost every year at this time. I do not know what it is, but run out of people just assume that the holidays are not a good time to try for a job. I think it’s human nature: they are the things out until the new year, so you assume the employers are, too. I think we all have jobs, where things do not really slowed worked in the month of December and must consequently make a lot of work.

But I can assure you that looking for a good time for the holiday job. In fact, I often tell customers that December is one of the best months for the job search.

So, this year, I’ll give my top 3 reasons why I think it is:

  1. less competition. I’ll tell you. We see it every year. The volume of clients dries in December, just more than three times a few weeks later in January. Simply put, the most popular month for the January to give people jobs to be sought. So if you wait for the month of January, start your job search, of which tripled twice, even the competition. Why not start now so that when other people are procrastinating.
