My New Resume Writing book for free for 2 weeks! Help Me Edit It!

For years people have asked me to write a guide to writing your resume. For years I have rejected it for reasons that I get in at the end of this post.

But today I am aware that I am a “Kindle Single” about resume writing and publishing on its head for you is that for the next two weeks, the entire text of the book for you live on the Internet can be read free of charge. Why? Because I want you to help me edit the final draft.

From now until 15 November each chapter is written in blog form over at ResumeWriting.com. This means, comments are open for every chapter. I encourage you to please first read the book through them, and if you have any questions … Questions have to … you can it in the comments. This allows me to things I have left are from the book. I want it as comprehensive as possible, so I think if I crowdsource the editing process, I will be able to question any reasonably conceivable on the resume writing process.

Reply

The result for you is that you read the book for free for two weeks (when it is released to be 99 cents). It also means that for a limited time, you will have a forum to answer any questions about resume writing could get from me. I’ll try to answer every comment. Please make sure that the issues are writing together again.

Why am I writing eventually publishing a book about again?

When I started TheJobBored.com in 2007, I did it because I thought that most career advice books sucked. If you have ever bought one, you probably know what I mean. They are full of vague, feel-good, inspirational advice. You have to sift through the pages to find the nuggets of good, practical tips.

find

It is not the fault of the authors, I guess. You can not from a physical book with only a few pages into it. Books you need to have hundreds of pages, the authors arrive at the end with a bunch of filler to the manuscript significantly enough (and justify the $ 19.95 cover price) to the printing process. Merit

That’s why I loved the blog format. I could be useful in real, tangible job search tips and hacks you want to know how to make a difficult question in the interview, such as the handle. “What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?” Bam! I could give you my best advice in an easily digestible few hundred words.

When I stumbled on Kindle Singles, I noticed that the format would be the perfect vehicle to finally do my resume writing book, I wanted to do it: simple, no nonsense, no BS, to the point. I would not count against arbitrary side to care. I might just as long to be like it, to give you the basics, how to make a resume.

Write

needed My goal with this book is simple: I want to hope a reader line by line through the process of writing a resume that anyone should be able to open their Kindle will open on the desk, a Word file. and then through the guide, as I tell them: “… First you do this you can now do so now you can do it”

Within an hour or two, the reader should be a fundamental re- ended, and I’m led them step by step through the entire process have.

If you need more detailed discussions of what again, and how they came to be, and tons of footnotes and filler – fine! There are other books out there again.

But hopefully we will simply say that a job seeker, what you do or do they need to continue a basic.

So write, click and help me to ResumeWriting.com the finishing touches on it. Thank you!

How To Talk About Having Quit a Job

How To Talk About Having Quit a Job

In interviews, almost everywhere you will inevitably run the same handful of questions over and over again. One of the most popular is, why you left your previous position. The answer to this question can be tricky: you must be able to provide a logical explanation of why you left without giving side than bitter or negative. The difficulty of this issue is exacerbated when you were fired or asked to resign from your last position. Fortunately, it does not come to an online promotion with an effective response, and with a little forethought, you can answer this question, without hurting your chances of being adjusted.

To begin, it is important to understand why the employer that question at all. Candidate resumes look great, but it may be a difference between what documented on paper and how people have actually handles himself at work. Could search with the question of why you left your previous job, employers to hire potential problems with prospective customers that are not reflected by their application materials to detect them.

The interviewer tried to include information about how you pick up with adversity. Whether you left your job voluntarily, were dismissed or were sacked, your answer to this question will give an insight to act like one under difficult circumstances. This question is an inquiry into your personal integrity. So, armed with this knowledge, how would you answer the question?

It is important that the question in a way, the answer is not critical to your current employer. They react as positively as you are reasonable. If you because you were burnt out with working for the company and decided that she could not bear it, there is no longer working, do not trash your employer. Instead, you might say, you were looking for a position that you would better chance to grow professionally respond. If you quit because you hated the job, you can request a position with the various tasks that could not speak your old company. Whatever the case, not on the negative about your former employers to concentrate. Instead, come up with a reason that your desire to work in a positive light.

switch throws

Another thing you can do in order to stand out, it should be mentioned, what you’ve done since leaving your work. If you’ve done consulting or enrolled in classes, then by all means point it out. Employers tend to give sympathetic consideration activity between jobs, that you take good initiative and handle adversity.

shows

Finally, it is important to ensure that your delivery is correct. Never tell a lie to an interviewer. A company can easily cross-check the reason why you left your job with your former employer. When a potential employer can learn the wrong circumstances have your last job, you are in a worse situation than if the truth be told, even if it is not very favorable.

Keep your answer positive, but also truthful. It may be necessary to ensure that your answer several times before the interview practice, you can be honest without hurting your chances of employment.

This is a difficult question, and leads many applicants to stumble when they are unprepared. Through the faithful and experienced in your response, you will be able to make a big impression on the interviewer. A solid answer here helps you push to the top of the list of recruiters, and put so much closer to landing your next job. Good luck!

Easy Job Search Tip: If you want to listen again, follow the instructions!

Easy Job Search Tip: If you want to listen again, follow the instructions!

It Job search is a common refrain:

“I’ve sent my resume out hundreds of times and I’ve heard nothing back”

9 times out of 10 but there is one simple reason. Want to know what it is? Well, you have to go a bit into the psychology of the human resources manager.

In this market, if an employer posts a job, she’s probably got dozens – no – hundreds of applications for the advertised position. So if you are the person that are the setting that you are for some reason, that stack of applications to find the right size cut. I mean, realistically, you will only call on 3-4 or 10-15 people for interviews, is not it? So, if the stack meets again your desk or your mailbox, you are looking for the fastest and simplest reason for Culture of the flock, is not it?

Well, there are dozens of ways that could be a hiring manager you weed out and discard your resume directly into the trash. Your resume can be garbage. You could unqualified for that which you requested. You could even just too far back into the pile.

But you know, the fastest way your resume hits the trash It is quite simple:. if you do not follow the instructions in the job ad

Every single job ad, either online, in a newspaper or whatever has three components:

  1. The description of the Jobs
  2. The description of the type of candidates they are looking for, and … Guidance on the application.

Over the years I’ve seen job seekers not again and again for no other reason than the fact that they component 3

ignored

The employer will tell you how they want to apply. Online? Through their website? By Monster? Via LinkedIn recommendation? Via e-mail? In person? Over the phone? They will tell you in which format, in what time frame and how often you can apply.

If you’re simply not in the way they have specifically requested, shall be, I can almost guarantee that you will make your CV and your application immediately to go to the Recycle Bin.

It is just human nature.

I mean, the hiring manager must think like this:

“If you do not even this jobseekers follow the instructions we set out expressly in our job offer, how could I always assume posed it would be good at following directions on the labor market? ”

So you do not make the first (worst) possible errors in applying for a job. Do not ignore the instructions in the job advertisement on how to apply.

I know it seems so easy … so simple as to be stupid. But, especially with online job search, people tend to have a shotgun approach. They are in every way possible. They argue about monsters. They argue about the company’s website. E-mail. They call.

Please … for your own sake … not.

simply in this way they ask you.

APPLY

If spamming people worked for a job, then there would be no Viagra spam you would get in your e-mail spam box. It would be candidates. In the same way you do not like spam, which want an invitation to you do not have to be in a format that you did not request … It is exactly the same for the hiring manager. If a job ad, you will learn how to apply for a job, follow these instructions to the letter, otherwise you risk what the hiring manager of the simplest reason in the world to delete your resume

New Graduate Resume – 5 Things to Get Right to a New Degree CV

New Graduate Resume – 5 Things to Get Right to a New Degree CV

An economy that is in the ditch hard for all job seekers, but especially so for new graduates. New graduates was probably 2-4 years in their programs on the wings of an expanding economy. Most are now falling fast as the economy has retrenched and jobs hard to come for those with little or no practical experience in their field. But there are jobs out there, though few. And they will go to someone. To ensure that you are one of those somebodies by your new graduate to be the best again. Can

begin 5 Things To Get Right to the New Graduate Resume

1) Select General Over Targeted Resume . The days are gone when can new writing degrees a “one-size-fits-all” with a general objective statement, a bunch of overworked again clichés and A Chorus Line from part-time positions, which are each weighted equally, whether to continue relevant or not. Find a job in this environment requires a targeted approach. Each resume you submit a job must be aligned to this position , your goal should (if you have one) to mention this position by name, and every ingredient in your Profile section is home to the drive the point that you are the right person for the job. Also, details on your education and experience sections should be modified to reflect a maximum compatibility with the targeted work.

And yes, this process should be repeated for each job you are applying. More work? You bet. Welcome to a recessionary economy.

2) add an objective statement and a profile section . Yes, I know. Resume objective statements have taken a beating in recent years, many career counselors advise including one on the resume. As a bit of a contrarian, I think it should remain an option, and to continue mainly due to a new conclusion. Why? There are resuming focus of an immediate, and – if properly formulated – the possibility of directly to the specific qualifications of the job in question (eg, entry-level position in retail merchandising, the value of team-player with a strong sense of fashion and a relevant academic background.)

your profile (or summary) is either instead of, or directly under the lens. Your profile is one short section (two or three lines, perhaps three bullets services below these lines) gives you the ability, skills and training that best qualify you for the position at hand to mark. Note that this section might change slightly with each new targeted CV, how to discreetly fit your skills, meet the qualifications for each job.

3) Highlight your education . For most new graduates, their training of their business card. Situate the training section directly below the profile. That is, unless it is at least one full-time job for one year or longer have kept, and this work particularly relevant to your destination. In this case, put the experience in the education section above list, and explain how you would like to stress that job.

4) If you GPA Use. Mention your grade point average overall, though it is 3.5 or higher. In fact, emphasize that fact in your resume. On the other hand, if your GPA is not so good, especially something less than 3.0, you allow it to resume fully. Mention your major GPA if 3.5 or more, or higher than your general is.

5) courses and offers . List of individual college courses, campus activities, such as in indirect proportion to the strength of your experience section. In other words, if your experience is lacking big time completed to elaborate on specific courses, campus activities, club memberships, offices, etc. Conversely, most or all downplay, and let off some completely , if You have one or more jobs that add heft to your destination instead. And if you are in a totally dependent to fill a list of course work space, what else can be a desert moonscape of a resume, try to show how the knowledge gained from these courses transfer to your stated goal, and the needs of employers .

New Grad – Some Things in your favor

As a new graduate, you have some things for you. They have a good academic foundation in the chosen profession, you have the fact that you are trainable, and chances are you’re technologically savvy demonstrated as members of the previous generation. And you have a new perspective and a can-do attitude (in other words, you still have not crushed under the boots of cynicism and apathy have been).

Make sure your CV looks equally good, and get out there.

Electronic Resume Formats – For the 6 most popular E-Resumes

Electronic Resume Formats – For the 6 most popular E-Resumes

In today’s labor market, one must fully embrace the power electronics and the Internet. But job seekers are quickly confronted with a number of formatting options for making their electronic CV to their ultimate destination. Get the wrong format and you do not read your resume. Get

The six most popular formats for electronic CV

The Formatted Resume . The traditional resume, which you see in print. Written with a word processing program (usually Microsoft Word), which is again formatted for e-mail transmission as a file attachment. Two possible problems with the latter. 1) It depends on the e-mail recipients in the same word processing software application on their computers have to open the attachment and view its content. 2) It is susceptible to viruses. For this reason, such systems are often not acceptable to companies.

The Plain Text Resume . Also known as ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) resume, this is a simple text format that your CV can be read by virtually every computer in the world. It is free of graphics and ornaments: do not feel like bullets, no bold no italics. The ASCII can be resumed to be sent as an e-mail file attachments, affixed to the body of an e-mail or be inserted piece by piece on e-forms on job boards, corporate websites and the like. It is not pretty to look at, but gets the job done.

The Scannable Resume . Basically, a text or ASCII resume is printed is. This applies if a company calls for a hard-copy with the intention to continue the document in its keyword-searchable database scan. Transmitted by mail or fax. Sidebar:. Hard-copy scannable increasing rapidly losing favor in the market as databases are increasingly able to accept again directly from e-mail, the need for someone to physically sit scanning paper

The Rich Text Format Resume . Even as RTF (Rich Text Format) known again, this is a file format easily by most word processing programs (Word, WordPerfect, etc.) by simply saving the resume as a Rich Text (file extension is created of.rtf). Use the two-stage process in word “File, Save As”. In general, simple graphics and embellishments are (bold, italics, etc) will remain intact through the conversion, although more complex enhancements – graphs and tables – can not be fair so well. An RTF again sent as an email attachment is accessible across all platforms, regardless of word processing software. And an RTF file system is less susceptible to viruses than Word.

Portable Document Format Resume . A resume is a PDF file format that preserves all the design elements – interesting fonts, bold, italic, bulleted lists and the like – usually limited to application software due. But it independent of application software is delivered. That means you do not need the recipient of your e-mails to your particular version of Word (or Word Perfect, et al.) Have on their computer systems are able to open your attachment. It is accessible on both PCs and Macs, and it is virtually virus as evidence. On the other hand, if a PDF is provided resume for a keyword-scannable database, the document must themselves be scanned physically first (as opposed to an ASCII file, a PDF file can not be sent directly from the e-mail to the database).

Web Resume . The Web-based or HTML resume is basically a published page on a website. It is beneficial because you web traffic directly to the website, and can be resumed as feature-rich as you allow your imagination (and common sense). You do need to restart a host and the architecture of a web.

The choice of the right to publish electronic resume file format

particular format that allows you to transmit your electronic resume by the method of transmission (e-mail, for example , vs. posting a job board or company website) and the intended target (the human eye vs. computer software will be dictated, which will be scanning for key words).

Get the right file format, and get your electronic resume read. In addition, it is up to the talent, the work in hand, the resume.

Why did I not get the job? Here is the number one reason:

Well, it’s time for my” “height =” Why “series (# 1 here why) (why # 2 here) to finish.

This leaves us with the big question: Why did not I

the job

I mean, you thought the interview went well. It went so well! The employer was impressed. They even heard through the grapevine that they are likely to rent. And you were qualified! Oh, you were so qualified for this. This job was right up your alley!

So, why do not you have the job?

to look in my 15 years working with clients on their job, I’ve noticed there are many possible reasons why you could not have done to get:

  • Since was someone more qualified. It could even be the best person she had been interviewed , which at the time of the interview. But then someone came along and blew them out of the water.
  • The employer changed what they are looking over the course of the interview process. She would have been perfect for what they thought they wanted, but later they decided to go in another direction.
  • you were wrong. They thought the interview went well. You thought you were impressive. But perhaps all that was wrong. One should be honest with yourself in assessing these things.
  • The job was not really to win from you. They were to say only interviews they had. Really, she had someone else in mind all the time.

But you know, over the years is the number one reason … by far … that I am, why else do the job perfectly qualified people do not get to see just

they just do not Like You.

I think that when it comes to job search, interviews and attitude, a lot of people, how much personal relationships come into play. Obviously the hiring manager is trying to determine whether you can do the job and do not underestimate it. But they also decide on something a little more subtle but no less profound? Can this person work well with my existing team

Even simpler than that, they have to decide:. I will work with this person and day by day

sometimes, it’s really a the question, they just were not you on. And I, if you could somehow people to be honest about it bet … I’ll bet far more than 50% of the time when someone will apparently not set perfectly for the job, it is called a personality.

So if they just do not like you, think just do not fit, you would, there’s really nothing you can do. And you can not take it personally, really. I mean, who says that they are wrong? Who says you would not have been bad fit? Who says you would not have gotten along with them?

If you suspect, has not gotten the job because you just do not click personally, think of it as out: there are other fish in the sea. And there are other jobs you are qualified for the final analysis to better fit are personal.

Book Review: Job Search with Social Media for Dummies

Book Review: Job Search with Social Media for Dummies

class = Thanks Joshua Waldman, had I was lucky, an advanced copy of the Job Search with Social Media for Dummies . I do not normally book reviews on this blog, but this is an important issue. Social media has completely transformed the world of recruitment and job search in the last 5-6 years. Any modern job seeker must be aware at least, the social aspects of finding a job … and mastering these tools is the key to landing the right job can be faster.

Job Search with Social Media For Dummies is aligned, the average job seeker. It is assumed that the reader has the best understanding of the Internet medium. It is assumed, at least know what blogs and probably a LinkedIn profile. So if your mother asks, “what a blog is” this is perhaps a bit advanced for her.

    offers

But if you are using social sites, Google, Twitter and all that, then this book is some comprehensive strategies, the key to social media are seeking employment. It will help you understand how

  • Manage your online reputation, which is the key, key presses. Do not you just assume, “Well, I’m nobody, I’m not on the Internet.” Big mistake! You need to know what an employer is found, if you find them after.
  • to effectively use your existing online networks. LinkedIn as a driving force for your professional online professional brand. Administrative
  • Google work for you, not against you.
  • Twitter to build an online reputation. Manage your time online.

All in all, the book is comprehensive and quite good. In his in-depth sections, it is also about social tools in LinkedIn and recommends strategies such as advanced keyword marketing and CRM contact databases. I think this book could have on the other tools out there (especially for professionals and those in the media) touches like Wix and Weebly portfolio repositories like figdig.com. But all in all, this is a “For Dummies” Career Guide, which desperately needed for quite some time now.

Why can not I Heard back after the interview?

Why can not I Heard back after the interview?

Continuing my “Why” series, it’s time to tackle the most asked question in this blog.

Consider this scenario: You have gotten the interview. You think it went well. They said they that they get back to you with their decision.

So you wait. And wait …. And wait …

Why is that bad employers are geting back to you after the interview? Is this a bad sign? I already have several posts about this situation, including a discussion of how long you wait before the follow-up, and some rules on how follow-up written after an interview.

But let’s just with the “why” do it now. Why is it taking so long to hear again?

These are the most likely scenarios:

    id = “more-1779″>

    1. You’re not going to get the job . get I know this is exactly what you want to hear, but it could be the most likely cause.
    2. Some employers are simply too slow. Have you ever applied for a government or public sector? The mountains of bureaucracy can be immense. Do not underestimate the glacial speed to move with some organizations when it comes time to make decisions. Maybe the location is not available. I can not say the amount of time I had customers tell me that she had interviewed for a position, only to discover it had already filled out. Sometimes an employer is large enough that one hand does not know

      what the other does.

    3. Maybe they are just filling a quota. There are tons of cases, say where an employer simply to advertise and interview for an opening just that, when in fact they are going to end up setting the person they had in mind all the time.
    4. Perhaps the person you interviewed is not the same person who makes the final hiring decision. You could have interviewed a person or a team, but either way, made at the end the decision by committee. If there is one person to interview and that same person makes the decision, then the decision may come soon. But if the decision of the Committee, it could be a while to take to hash out. Maybe you’re the second choice, but they expect that their first choice to turn it down. They keep you on the line just in case. Perhaps they are no longer wants to hire anyone, much less you. Sometimes the actual act of seeing, which is there to fill out a specific location, an employer change its mind and decide it’s not worth it after all.
the end I know not why the employer take so long to give a definitive yes or no. It’s rude and annoying. In the end, maybe it’s just bad manners or organization responsible for the employer. But if you ask one of the people, why have you not heard back yet, in my experience, there is usually one of the reasons mentioned above.

Why did not I Get The (job) interview?

Why did not I Get The (job) interview?

Today I’m going to start a “Why” series on this blog. Many of the questions I get from readers (and a lot of posts in our forum readers) revolve around the question: “Why?” So I’ll try some common reasons “why” things are perhaps not in the drafting offer your job search.

Not every point will apply to you, but you should consider any serious consideration, because if you have one or two things that trigger you can change, then get to hear more “yes” on the way to landing a new job.

    First up:

Why did not I get the interview?

    You have therefore sends

continue after you’re back but not always interviews. You’re not even ever recall or e-mails! Why? What are you doing wrong? Consider these possibilities:

    1. Your resume is hurting you. A resume is all you have to have to make a first impression. It’s like a come-in a singles bar. If what you’re doing does not work, then you need to know what you are saying look. Maybe your resume is not effective enough. Perhaps it is not standing above the crowd. Worse, some back to basic errors that could actually hurt your chances at the interview. Consider bend or even rewriting your resume wholesale. If you are not getting are results, then tweak the one thing that is a business card. Of course, I would recommend engaging professional resume services to help you. But you know I’m biased on this front. :)
    2. You are trying too hard. 200 sent back not equal to 200 interviews. If you are taking the shotgun approach to job applications, then you’re doing something wrong. Seriously study the openings are, and try to use a targeted approach. They are to concentrate on the 5-10 most likely positions and do out best for those. You ‘re not qualified. Be honest with yourself. Are you applying for a job that is over your head? You could really want that prestigious job, but maybe you are simply not qualified to do so yet. If you are looking for jobs, apply outside your league, then you’re just wasting time. Try focusing on jobs that are available. Be realistic about your qualifications. You ‘re not paying attention. The only information you have about what the employer wants, in this job advertisement. So your application / resume targeting what the job ad says the employer is looking for? Have you done your homework and discussed what they say they are looking for? If you are just sending resumes from generic without taking the time to do some research and tailor your resume to what they say they need, then you also might not be. You’re too late. In this job market every job quickly attract hundreds of applicants. If you posted a job two weeks ago to apply, you could quite perfect for them, but your application simply closes the pile, the building has all the time. It may be annoying to constantly job boards and try to jump to new posts, but it could well be worth your time to do so.
